We were first introduced to Canada and RV travel in 1995. Over twenty years later - in 2018 - we traveled across Canada once again with a rental motorhome. We were again impressed by the beautiful nature, wildlife, delicious food and most of all nice residents!

Our travel period was from April 29 to May 30, 2018. In the preseason, nature does its best to shake off the winter snow and you can see beautiful spring blooms popping up everywhere. This time of year is also fairly quiet for traveling and visiting attractions and national parks. During this trip, Lake Louise was still frozen and there was plenty of snow in the Lake Louise campground. That was also a special experience.

We really enjoy traveling in an RV. This gives us a feeling of being close to nature. Since you always have your home with you, you don't have to book anything in advance. Should the campground be full, you can always park in a parking lot at, for example, Wal-Mart. An ultimate feeling of freedom!

RV rental 2018

We booked the motorhome with a German motorhome rental company Cu Camper. This organization offers the same as the well-known Dutch rental companies, but in addition to the lower rates, the excess waiver is also included (therefore > €11.00 per day cheaper). We were also given a CAD 50.00 fuel card as a gift.
Should you find it "scary" to book over the Internet, you can pay with your credit card. You are then always insured in case of emergencies.

The numbers
  • Number of days/nights motorhome rental: 29 days, 28 nights
  • Number of kilometers driven: 3700 (23000 Mi)
  • Cost of motorhome rental: € 1,314,=
  • Gasoline consumption: the motorhome runs 1 in 4 (lt/km)

Tips
  1. Call the rental company to make a pick-up appointment. Try to make the appointment as early as possible. Once in America we had taken an "early bird" arrangement (at extra cost), but this is not always a guarantee that you can hit the road earlier with your motorhome
  2. When we pick up the RV, we first drive to nearest Wal-Mart to stock up on groceries. The parking lots are very large, no need to worry about insufficient parking space
  3. Tip: make a list in advance, the supermarkets are huge stores you can get well lost in. You can also order your groceries in advance and pick them up at a specific time
  4. Do not plan the first stop a five-hour or longer drive away from the RV pickup site. After all, picking up, packing up and shopping also takes time
  5. Traveling without planning is what we like best about traveling. Especially in the early and late season, there is always a spot available. Just check if there are national holidays or other local vacations planned, because then it is smart to book in advance.
  6. We made the crossing to America - Port Angeles. You do need to fill in an Esta . Read in advance what you can/can't bring to America. Our fruit basket was empty when we arrived in America?
Handy to bring from home

Your trip really isn't less fun without it. For us, it's mostly comfort.

  • Bring one Canadian plug and a Dutch power strip. You can then just plug your Dutch plugs into the power block. Really handy if you want to charge many devices at once!
  • Fitted sheets (from the rental company you only get 1 sheet, will you lie on/under that?)
  • Extra blanket. At Cruise Canada you get thin comforters and at night it is quite chilly
  • Old towels/tea towels. We throw these away at the end of the trip. You only get 2/3 towels per person from the rental company. Since clothes are a lot cheaper in Canada and America, we immediately have space left in our suitcase to take this with us on the way back.
Handy to buy at Wal-Mart
  • It is wonderful to live outside during your trip. Especially if you can sit/lie down comfortably while doing so. Through the RV rental company, you can usually rent director's chairs. We don't find that comfortable. We bought lovely lazy chairs at Walmart ($28,-)
  • We like to drink coffee. Since there was no coffee machine for rent, we bought one ($10,-).

At the last campsite, we made Canadians happy with the chairs and coffee machine!

Campgrounds

We picked up the motorhome and returned it to Vancouver. We drove towards the National Parks first and then took a number of ferries to Vancouver Island. The list below shows the campsites we visited.

Fun campsites, restaurants and attractions

Everyone has different tastes and has a different take on fun! Below is a picture of our preference which we made right after our.

2023 to Canada again - this time with our own motor home!

In 2021, we heard about the possibility of shipping your own RV to Canada/America. We immediately got to work figuring out what all needed to be arranged. April 20, 2023 is the day! The motorhome will then be shipped to Halifax - Canada and we want to fly in a few days later. We will travel through Canada, America and maybe Mexico.
