America and Canada are great motorhome countries. The nature is beautiful and offers great diversity, there are interesting cities, towns and attractions and the roads and parking facilities are spacious. In this blog we want to list the biggest rental companies and at which Dutch providers you can book these motorhomes.

Everything we write is from our own experience. This blog is not meant to write negatively about any intermediary. On the contrary, the pre-trip service and information is top notch with all of them! But there is price difference for the exact same product and that, besides explaining how to rent an RV, is what we want to highlight. We have rented a motorhome in Canada and America several times: through Tioga Tours, Jan Doets, CU travel and RV Camperworld. The motorhomes were 2x from Cruise Canada, 2x from Cruise America, 2x from Road Bear and 1x from RV Camperworld.

There are a number of major RV rental companies in America and Canada. In America they are :

  • Cruise America
  • Road Bear
  • El Monte

In Canada, they are:

  • Cruise Canada
  • Canadream
  • Fraserway

You can book directly with these companies or through a Dutch intermediary. The best-known Dutch providers are:

  • Tioga Tours
  • Jan Doets
  • Travelhome (= ANWB)

We will elaborate on the quote request below.

  1. Cruise America always emerges as the cheapest provider. They work with flex fares based on supply and demand.
  2. If you book before Jan. 31, an early bird discount of 10% applies.
  3. Je kunt bij Cruise America de afkoop van je eigen risico en schade die standaard zijn uitgesloten extra verzekeren. Je kunt dit ook in Nederland doen. Tioga Tours verzekert dit via De Europeesche, Jan Doets en ANWB doen dit via een “eigen” verzekering. Kosten zijn incl. 21% btw.
  4. Only Jan Doets charges these fees.
  5. This needs no explanation.
  6. By default, 200 miles per day is recommended. If you choose a package with unlimited miles, it is cheaper than separate packages of 21*200=4200 km and paying your miles afterwards. The advantage of this unlimited package is that Tioga Tours and Jan Doets also include motorhome equipment, personal equipment and generator use. This does not have to be paid separately.
  7. An RV equipment includes kitchen utensils, such as pans, spoons, plates, cups, glasses, cutlery, etc. Also a broom and flashlight.
  8. A personal kit consists of blankets, sheets, pillow with pillowcase, towel, washcloth and dish towel
  9. A generator generates electricity using your gasoline from your fuel tank. In national parks there is not always electricity, you can then use the generator. By the way, this is only allowed at certain times because it makes a lot of noise.
  10. A C25 camper is a spacious camper, but a smaller model than C30. In terms of gasoline consumption, the C25 is slightly more favorable 1Lt. in 4-6Km., the C30 is 1Lt. in 4Km. The C30 is always cheaper than the C25. This is probably because there is more demand for a C25. In our comparison Tioga Tours has the best offer

Age and quality Campers

All motorhomes are built with a Ford engine and look similar in appearance. However, there is some difference in age and quality. The motorhomes we got from Cruise America/Canada were of the same year of construction that we rented them in, which is not always the case. The interior quality is poorly finished, sometimes the stove rack rattles and you have a drawer handle in your hand. 

De campers van El Monte en van Road Bear zijn van het bouwjaar, waarin jij ze huurt. Ze zijn kwalitatief beter en standaard voorzien van meer extra’s. Sommige campers hebben bijv.. een luifel of een slide-out en bij Road Bear zit bij het allinclusive ongelimiteerde mijlenpakket ook een campingtafel en stoelen, GPS en een VIP verzekering. 

Price difference Cruise America versus El Monte and Road Bear

Het prijsverschil is enorm. Voor dezelfde periode van 21 dagen in juni, inclusief alle vroegboekkortingen, betaal je tussen de ?700 en ?900 extra voor een C25 en ?1100 en ? 1250 meer voor een C30 camper. 

Conclusion

In 2015 we had a new vehicle special van Road Bear geboekt. De kwaliteit van de camper is niet alleen veel beter, maar ook van de uitrusting. Maar voor het prijsverschil van ?700-?1250 kun je een hoop leuke dingen doen en je komt evengoed op de plaats van je bestemming. Als er geen prijsverschil zou zijn, dan kiezen we 100% voor de campers van Road Bear.

Practical Tips
  1. The bedding consists of a comforter (very thin at Cruise America/Canada), a comforter cover, a pillowcase and 1 sheet. This sheet you use on your mattress, there is no flannel included. Buy cheap fitted sheets/molton in the Netherlands.
  2. Je kunt stoelen huren. Dat zijn “regisseur” stoelen die niet comfortabel zitten. Rijd na ontvangst van de camper naar de Walmart en haal daar lekkere stoelen. Na afloop kun je ze evt. verkopen aan nieuwe huurders of je geeft ze weg.
  3. Bring your own GPS navigation . 
  4. Do you have a C25 and are traveling with 4 people? Keep in mind that the French bed is narrow and small.
