New Vehicle special RV USA
In 2015, we booked a new-vehicle-special from Road Bear. Prior to the trip, we had no idea what we were going to do and had the idea that it would be way too cold to travel around in an RV. However, the trip was amazing! We discovered so many unexpected beautiful gems. We fondly remember the trip and the wonderful new motorhome.
What is a new-vehicle-special?
Elk jaar rollen er duizenden campers van de fabrieksband. De camperverhuurders zorgen er met deze aanbieding voor dat de campers -voor de start van het hoogseizoen- op de plaats van bestemming staan. Je haalt de camper bij de fabriek op en brengt deze naar een van de plaatsen waar je uit kunt kiezen. De keuze bestaat meestal uit: Denver, Las Vegas, Los Angelos, Orlando, New York, Seattle en San Francisco en je kunt er maximaal 28 nachten over doen om de camper naar één van deze plaatsen te rijden.
Preseason
Campers must be picked up in the preseason. We chose the last pickup option at the time: March 20. It was cold in Chicago and there was still snow on the route to the RV factory. Keep in mind that you cannot use the water tank in freezing weather and many national parks are still closed.Â
HOW DOES A NEW VEHICLE SPECIAL WORK IN PRACTICE?
- Je kunt rechtstreeks boeken bij Roadbear, Cruise Amerika of El Monte. Je hebt dan zelf de keuze waar je jouw vliegtickets boekt, wat bij de Nederlandse aanbieders vaak niet het geval is. Je kunt ook bij Tioga Tours, Jan Doets, Travel Home of één van de vele andere aanbieders boeken. Wij vlogen van Amsterdam naar Chicago en de terugweg van Las Vegas naar Amsterdam.
- All RV rental companies require you to have had a hotel stay after a long flight. You cannot step into the motorhome directly from the airport.
- A large tour bus picks up all customers at predetermined hotels and takes them to the plant. In our case it was Middlebury-Indiana, now it is Elkhart-Indiana. Once everyone is signed in, in the huge parking lot full of RVs, you hear which RV is assigned to you.
- Haven't driven an RV before? Then you are required to watch an instructional film first.
- Everything in the motorhome new. Even the bedding and kitchen inventory is all still in plastic and boxes.
- Klaar voor vertrek? Je eerste bestemming zal waarschijnlijk een supermarkt zijn.
- Afterwards, you return the motorhome. We had cleaned the inside well. This was not necessary for the outside. You return the motorhome with the same amount of gasoline. The rental company checks the motorhome for damage. You book a cab on the spot to your hotel or to the airport.
Our experience
Wij hebben de camper via Tioga tours geboekt. We betaalden voor 3 weken camperhuur totaal €440. Echt heel goedkoop! De ticketprijzen waren marktconform, maar daar hadden we zelf een betere prijs voor kunnen vinden. We reden richting de warmte. De temperatuur in Las Vegas is heerlijk in april. Bij Bryce Canyon hebben we wel -9 graden gehad. De camperkachel werkt prima en het beddengoed van Road Bear is lekker dik. Road Bear biedt een goede uitrusting en maakt kwalitatief redelijke campers.
Our first stop was Leisure Lake Resort. This is a great stop if you have just picked up an RV and done some shopping. In brief, we list some of the fun places and sights we visited.
Anheuser Busch – factory in St. Louis
Anheuser Busch is one of the world's biggest beer producers. You probably know the brands Hertog Jan, Jupiler, Leffe, Budweiser, Stella Artois and Dommelsch. You can have a tour of the grounds and brewery. You feel like you're in a Willy Wonka factory. Everything is so polished, it looks like no work is being done. Also marvel at the beautiful horses, the Clydesdales and their special treatment. If you book an early tour, there is room to park an RV. The night before, we booked a campground in the neighborhood.
Harley Davidson factory
We visited the plant in Kansas. That opportunity is not there anymore. Are you in the Pennsylvania or Wisconsin area? Then check out the HD-website. Dit is namelijk wel heel gaaf om te ervaren. We waren maar met 3 personen en kregen dus een privé-rondleiding. Elke motor wordt pas gemaakt als er een bestelling is, alles is custommade. Elke fase van het bouwproces wordt je getoond en ook de afrondende testfasen.Â

- Grand Canyon National Park (note the North Rim is still closed in March).
De weg door Capitol Reef is zo verrassend mooi! In Bryce Canyon rijden bussen die je gratis kunt gebruiken op vertoon van je nationale parken pas. Een nationale parken pas is $80 en is het hele jaar en voor vier personen geldig. Deze pas is ook vaak op marktplaats te koop van mensen die een paar weken in Amerika hebben verbleven. Ruby’s Inn is a campground located before the entrance to Bryce Canyon. You can book very nice horseback rides along the canyon in the village.Â
We love driving the RV through these beautiful parks. Do you drive very early in the morning? Then the chances of spotting animals are very high. See a nice spot? Grab your chairs, make lunch and go enjoy the beautiful nature!
Las Vegas as an end stop is a very nice change after all the beautiful nature. Plenty of entertainment, restaurants and great weather!
In conclusion
Everything is top notch if you book a new-vehicle-special! If you don't mind that the first days near the factory can still be a bit chilly and not all parks are open, then you have a good deal! It is also very nice to be the first to drive the new motorhome.Â
